How To Build a Lighthouse
New St. George Island Lighthouse
Ever wonder how a lighthouse is built? I was fortunate to see it first hand on a recent visit to St. George Island, Florida. This lighthouse was painstakingly rebuilt from the ruins of the original St. George Island lighthouse which collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico in 2004 after standing for more than 130 years. The ruins were salvaged by island residents with barges and heavy equipment. Each recovered section and piece was broken apart and each brick was reclaimed and cleaned by hand to be used in for the new lighthosue built at the main intersection once entering the island. The lighthouse is expected to be completed by fall of 2008
