Grand Hall - Sams Club Grill Fire
I own a grill manufactured by Grand Hall Industries and was sold at Sams Club. I have owned this grill for several years and purchased the cast iron insert about a year ago to deep fry in. It has worked great and taken the mess of deep frying out of the house to the outside. A couple of friends and I decided to throw some steaks. I started off by preheating the grill and threw some really nice steaks on, then closed lid. After about one minute I noticed lots of smoke coming from the grill. I thought I better check on my steaks (real nice New York Strips) I opened the lid and was almost burned alive as the flames leaped from the grill to almost six feet in the air!!! The grease had apparently reached its flash point and it was as if I had gasoline in there. I desperatley wanted to save the steaks at this point and was able heroically pull the charred hunks of beef from fiery depths of the grill with a long screwdriver (closest, long enough, grilling tool available) I then shut the lid and started looking for something to put out the fire with. I was a bit panicky as I had the grill rolled out in my front driveway near my house and cars so I wasnt thinking real clearly. I figured by closing the grill top it would keep the fire at bay and burn itself out. A BIG MISTAKE …moment slater the entire stainless steel grill hood was glowing red from the intense heat!! I attempted to open the grill again with a long handle and the stainless steel hinge on the right side of the grill had actually melted!!! (I learned today the melting point of type 304 stainless steel is 1400 degrees farenheit!!)
In retrsospect, to put out the fire, I should of used baking soda or salt on the flames and covered the cast iron pot with a cookie sheet or the actual cover that goes with the cast iron pot. Lessons learned and I am now looking for a way to fix my grill which needs new stainless on the right side frame. Wish me luck.
